Medical Director's Desk

At Ocean Medical International we are always striving to improve our products and services, and are pleased to announce revisions to our website (still at http://www.omi2.com/), which we think now has a cleaner look and is easier to navigate. In the same vein, later in the Newsletter you can read about our latest Luxembourg medical kit and new-look Customer Inventories.

This Newsletter also bring you important news of changes to the Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) regulations, and of a refresher medical course for those who completed medical training more than five years ago.

Dr Ian Marshall,  Medical Director

  • Updated Proficiency in Medical Care Onboard Ship Course

  •

Refresher training for the Medical Care Onboard Ship Course is now available. The MCA and Merchant Navy Training Board have defined the entry requirements for this course as:

“Before commencing training, trainees must either have received approved or recognised training in Proficiency in Medical Care Onboard Ship (in accordance with Section A-V1/4-2 of STCW Code) or hold a certificate of Updated Proficiency in Medical Care Onboard Ship”.

If your certificate of Medical Care Onboard Ship Course is more than five years old you may undertake the Updated Medical Care Onboard Ship Course and not have to complete both Medical First Aid and Medical Care Onboard Ship Courses again.

This refresher course encompasses key points from both the Medical First Aid and Medical Care Onboard Ship Courses and is now available at Ocean Medical International in our Palma de Mallorca classroom. Further information about this and our other STCW 95 and MCA approved medical courses, including dates and fees, can be found at our website, www.omi2.com.

  • S/Y Polarity Solo & Transat Jaques Vabre Race
  •

Ocean Medical International came to the aid of the Anglo–American duo Paul Metcalf and Ryan Finn when they came up against the stringent safety rules of the famous French “Transat Jacques Vabre” race from France to Brazil. The 4,300nm double handed race featuring almost all of the top solo sailing stars including Ellen Macarthur and Mike Golding in their Open 60 yachts attracted some 470,000 people to the start in Le Harve.

Paul and Ryan aboard the Open 50 class yacht Polarity Solo – like all of the competitors - were only permitted to start with an extensive complement of safety equipment including a comprehensive Medical Kit that was to be inspected by the race doctor.

Skipper Paul Metcalf commented “At this level half the race is getting enough sponsorship to get to the start and quite a few did not make it. OMI provided us with an amazing compact medical kit that far surpassed what was required by even the stringent race regulations. That donation amongst others enabled us to stretch our funds and be able to enter in safety.”

Paul added “I sailed solo back from Brazil and a lot can go wrong in 30 days. Knowing that I could deal with most medical emergencies by picking up the phone was a great comfort. Thankfully I never needed to use it.”

Changes to Cardio-pulmonary Resuscitation & defibrillator regulations

The European Resuscitation Council has published changes to the CPR regulations. It has been recognised that quick and effective maintenance of the circulation immediately after cardiac arrest gives better survival rates. Changes to the CPR schedule have been introduced to shorten the time taken before starting chest compressions, and increasing the number of chest compressions from 15 to 30 in each cycle.

The recommendations for defibrillation have also been changed, with only one defibrillator shock to be given before resuming CPR.

These changes mean that the voice prompts and settings in current defibrillators will need to be re-programmed and we are in contact with our suppliers to find out how this will be done. We will let you know how these changes will be put into effect once the information is available. In the meantime, continuing with the present settings will not cause any harm.

The changes to CPR and defibrillation are now being taught on our STCW 95 and MCA Approved Medical Courses.
