Safe medical care at sea is dependant on three
components; taking away any one of these will result in inadequate
or unsafe treatment. Click on the boxes for more information.
Explanation
The 'Care Triad' Flowchart provides a system to
safely manage many medical situations and emergencies at sea when
a long way from standard medical facilities.
Through proper training, the initial priority is
to 'assess' the situation if a potential medical situation arises.
This means making the situation safe and may require urgent stabilization
treatment, such as resuscitation and defibrillation.
Further assessment is required once securing a safe
area and stabilizing a condition. This means taking the details
of the incident or complaint and making relevant examinations.
This Guide provides a system for recording precise
details during an assessment which is essential when obtaining
quick and accurate professional advice using Radio Medical Services.
The OMI system is designed to allow non-medical
personnel to assess and potentially stabilize a medical situation
by simply following the OMI Guides & Instructions.
With a wide-ranging medical kit available (the final
part of the triad) a vast range of medical situations can be controlled
safely.
If one part of the 'Triad' is missed medical care
will be incomplete and unsafe.
